Shifting the Mindset: Convenient to Conscious

Meet the Owners - Brandy & Shannon

April 05, 2024

What happens when a creative and a die-hard business girl come together?? For us, Lemon & Lavender was born!

Brandy's background in education makes her not only creative in bringing new products to life by way of manufacturing, but her love for teaching shines when hosting our workshops!

Brandy is a wife, mom of two (almost grown) boys, and has two sweet pups and a cat. The cat has yet to prove itself committed to the relationship though.

For now, you will almost always find Brandy at the baseball field. Having played when she was younger, she finds herself at home on the field watching her youngest in his now senior year. If she doesn't happen to be at the ballfield, you can almost certainly find her DIY'ing / creating / doing something while she binge watches one of her new favorite shows via her phone.

Shannon's background is business....from corporate to small business, she has worn multiple hats over the years, but her love of numbers is where she is most at home. An introvert by nature, you will almost always find her at a computer, number crunching to make sure all the things work.

Shannon is also a wife and mom of one (although, she claims many kiddos as her own) son. She is also blessed with a sweet daughter-in-law. Shannon and her husband have one last fur-baby who absolutely runs their house.

Shannon also finds time to run a few races here and there....Her most recent was the Disney Princess 10k. Having run approximately 7-9 half marathons over the last 10 years, she hopes to snag a full marathon before her running days (read knees) are done.

So how did the creative and the accountant meet??

Brandy taught Shannon's son English in junior high! (yes, they are that old!!) During those schooling years, their families wound up traveling multiple times to Europe via school-sanctioned trips. And then several years later their paths would cross again leading to 2018 when Brandy and Shannon began tossing around an idea of a store...knowing the only place they could call home would be in Historic Downtown Madison. Their little idea sat on a shelf until December of 2020.

The doors of Lemon & Lavender officially opened at 16 Main St. on February 6, 2021! The next year in March, Brandy and Shannon made a verbal agreement to lease 108 Main St once renovations were complete. After 22 months of waiting, the new location opened its doors on October 7, 2023!

This ride has been a whirlwind of chaos, laughter, heartache and a lot of sweat equity! Brandy and Shannon are honored to be able to provide North Alabama with its first refillery and are committed to continue researching, learning and leading the way to make our area more sustainable and eco-friendly.

Deck the Halls the Eco-Friendly Way: Sustainable Christmas Decorating Ideas

November 06, 2023

The holiday season is a time of joy, togetherness, and celebration. It's also a time when many people embrace the tradition of decorating their homes to create a warm and festive atmosphere. While traditional decorations can be delightful, they often come at the cost of the environment. This year, why not make a change? Embrace the spirit of sustainability with eco-friendly Christmas decorating ideas that will not only make your home look fantastic but also reduce your ecological footprint.
**1. Natural Wreaths and Garlands:**
One of the most beautiful and eco-friendly ways to decorate for Christmas is by incorporating natural elements. Create wreaths and garlands using fresh greenery, pinecones, and twigs gathered from your yard or a local forest. These decorations not only look stunning but also fill your home with the invigorating scent of the outdoors.
**2. Energy-Efficient LED Lights:**
When it comes to lighting up your holiday display, opt for energy-efficient LED lights. LED lights consume significantly less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, reducing your electricity bill and environmental impact. You can also put your lights on timers to save even more energy.

**3. Upcycled Ornaments:**
Instead of buying new ornaments every year, consider upcycling. Transform old or unused items like buttons, wine corks, or even newspaper into unique and charming ornaments. This creative approach not only reduces waste but also adds a personal touch to your tree.
**4. Repurpose and Reuse:**
Before rushing to buy new decorations, explore what you already have. Can you refresh your existing decorations with a coat of eco-friendly paint, ribbons, or fabric? Repurposing your decorations is not only sustainable but also a fun DIY project.
**5. Edible Decorations:**
Why not combine decoration with a delicious treat? Hang edible ornaments like popcorn strings, gingerbread cookies, or dried fruit slices on your tree. When the season ends, you can enjoy these treats or feed them to the birds.
**6. Potted Christmas Trees:**
If you prefer a real Christmas tree, opt for a potted one. After the holidays, you can plant it in your garden, or keep it in the pot for next year. This way, you reduce the environmental impact associated with cut trees.
**7. Handmade Fabric Advent Calendar:**
Create a reusable fabric advent calendar that you can fill with small, meaningful gifts or acts of kindness. It's a sustainable alternative to disposable, single-use advent calendars. We've found this amazing DIY --> https://www.lovelyetc.com/how-to-make-an-inexpensive-reusable-advent-calendar/
**8. Natural Candles:**
Choose candles made from natural materials like soy, beeswax, or palm. These candles burn cleanly and are a safer and more sustainable choice compared to paraffin candles. Some of our favorites are from Sweet Water Decor with all the best holiday scents. Check them out here -->

**9. Eco-Friendly Gift Wrapping:**
Incorporate eco-friendly gift wrapping into your decor by using recycled paper, fabric, or reusable gift bags. Consider adding a sprig of holly, a small pinecone, or a ribbon made from jute for a festive touch.
**10. Energy-Efficient Decorations:**
If you love inflatables and other outdoor decorations, opt for solar-powered or energy-efficient alternatives. These reduce electricity consumption and can be powered by renewable energy.
**11. Reusable Tableware:**
For your holiday feasts, choose reusable tableware, such as cloth napkins, real dishes, and utensils. If you must use disposables, look for biodegradable or compostable options.
**12. Homemade Potpourri:**
Fill your home with the scent of the season using homemade potpourri. Simply simmer ingredients like orange peels, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in a pot of water on the stove.
Christmas Potpourri
Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cup Fresh Cranberries
  • 1 Lemon
  • 1 Grapefruit
  • 1 Apple
  • 2-3 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 1 Tbsp. Vanilla
  • 3-4 Small Pine Tree Branches
  • Water
Instructions
  1. Cut the lemon, grapefruit, and apple into slices.
  2. In a medium-size saucepan, add all the ingredients. Fill the pot with water.
  3. Place on burner and bring to a slow boil. Once it gets to a boil then turn it down to low and let it simmer. Make sure to check it every few hours and add more water when needed. Turn off the burner when all done.
  4.  It should keep and continue to smell for 3-4 days depending on what ingredients you use. Just make sure to add more water each time you turn it on.
  5. Enjoy this amazing aroma of the Holidays!

**13. Sustainable Centerpieces:**
Create eco-friendly centerpieces using elements from nature, compostable items, and pieces that you already have on hand. We love utilizing these large dough bowls because the inside can easily be interchanged for the holiday. **14. Give the Gift of Experiences:**
Consider a shift from physical gifts to experiences. Offer your loved ones the gift of a shared activity or a memorable event instead of material possessions. It's a sustainable and thoughtful way to celebrate the season.
**15. Minimalist Decorating:**
Less can be more. Embrace a minimalist decorating style, using a few carefully chosen items to make a big impact. This not only reduces waste but also allows each decoration to shine.
By adopting these eco-friendly Christmas decorating ideas, you can make your holiday season more sustainable and meaningful. It's a way to celebrate the spirit of togetherness and giving, not just during the holidays but all year round. So, deck the halls with joy and sustainability this Christmas!

Creating a Sustainable Kitchen: A Guide to Eco-Friendly Living

August 10, 2023

The kitchen is the heart of the home, a place where we prepare and enjoy meals, gather, and connect. As awareness about our ecological footprint grows, many are seeking ways to make their kitchens more sustainable. Here's a guide to creating an eco-friendly kitchen without compromising on style or function.
**1. Start with Sustainable Materials:**
Choose sustainable, recycled, or upcycled materials when renovating or building your kitchen. Opt for bamboo or reclaimed wood for cabinets, recycled glass for countertops, and natural stone or ceramic tiles that have been responsibly sourced.
**2. Energy-Efficient Appliances:**
Select Energy Star-rated appliances, which consume less power and water. This not only reduces your carbon footprint but also slashes your utility bills.
**3. Reduce Plastic Use:**
Swap plastic containers for glass or stainless steel alternatives. Invest in beeswax wraps instead of plastic cling film, and choose wooden or bamboo utensils over plastic ones.
**4. Implement a Composting System:**
Around 30% of household waste is organic. By composting kitchen scraps, you can reduce landfill waste and create nutrient-rich soil for your garden.
**5. Grow Your Own:**
Even if you don't have a garden, you can grow herbs on your kitchen window sill or balcony. This reduces the environmental impact of transporting food and ensures you have fresh, pesticide-free herbs at your fingertips.
**6. Minimize Water Waste:**
Install a low-flow faucet and consider collecting rainwater for watering plants. Always fix drips promptly — a dripping tap can waste over 20 gallons of water a day!
**7. Buy in Bulk:**
Shopping in bulk reduces the amount of packaging waste. Store grains, nuts, and other staples in glass jars or cloth bags.
**8. Opt for Natural Cleaners:**
Instead of chemical-laden cleaning products, use natural alternatives like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon. They're just as effective and much kinder to the environment.
**9. Sustainable Cookware:**
Opt for durable cookware that can last a lifetime. Cast iron, stainless steel, and glass are great choices.
**10. Mindful Disposal:**
Be conscious of how you dispose of old kitchen items. Donate usable goods, recycle where possible, and only throw away what's truly waste.
**11. Reduce Meat Consumption:**
It takes a lot more resources to produce meat compared to vegetables or grains. Consider having a few meatless meals each week or exploring plant-based alternatives.
**12. Support Local Produce:**
Buying locally grown food reduces the carbon footprint linked with transportation. Plus, it supports local farmers and often tastes better because it's fresher.
Creating a sustainable kitchen is not just about making eco-friendly choices but adopting a mindset of mindfulness and responsibility. By making thoughtful decisions and being aware of our impact on the planet, we can enjoy our kitchens while also caring for the Earth.

The Beauty in Going Natural: Exploring the Benefits of Switching to Natural Beauty Products

June 13, 2023

In a world where self-care and personal well-being are gaining prominence, the switch to natural beauty products has become more than just a passing trend. By embracing the power of nature, we can nourish our skin, hair, and overall beauty while minimizing our exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. In this article, we will explore the numerous benefits of transitioning to natural beauty products and why it's a worthwhile choice for your health and the environment.

1. Gentle and Nourishing

One of the primary advantages of natural beauty products is their gentle and nourishing nature. Unlike their synthetic counterparts, these products often contain plant-based ingredients, organic extracts, and essential oils. These natural elements offer a plethora of benefits, such as hydrating the skin, promoting a healthy scalp, and providing long-lasting moisture without causing irritation or adverse reactions. Natural beauty products prioritize ingredients that are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals, offering a gentle touch while enhancing the health and appearance of your skin and hair.

2. Free from Harmful Chemicals

Conventional beauty products often contain a range of potentially harmful chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and artificial fragrances. Switching to natural beauty products allows you to eliminate or minimize exposure to these substances. By opting for natural alternatives, you reduce the risk of skin irritation, allergies, and long-term health implications. Additionally, many natural beauty brands are transparent about their ingredient lists, making it easier for consumers to make informed choices and avoid harmful substances.

3. Environmental Responsibility

Choosing natural beauty products is not only beneficial for your personal health but also for the environment. Many conventional beauty products contribute to pollution and the depletion of natural resources due to their manufacturing processes and non-biodegradable packaging. Natural beauty brands often prioritize sustainable sourcing, eco-friendly production methods, and packaging made from recyclable or biodegradable materials. By opting for natural alternatives, you support environmentally responsible practices and contribute to a healthier planet.

4. Cruelty-Free and Ethical

Animal testing is a contentious issue in the beauty industry. Many natural beauty brands proudly adopt a cruelty-free stance, ensuring their products are not tested on animals. By choosing natural beauty products, you align your values with companies that prioritize ethical practices and compassionate alternatives to animal testing. This commitment to cruelty-free products promotes a more compassionate approach to beauty and ensures that no animals suffer for the sake of cosmetics.

Switching to natural beauty products brings forth a multitude of benefits, ranging from gentle and nourishing formulations to the promotion of environmental sustainability and ethical practices. By embracing nature's gifts, we can enhance our beauty rituals while making conscious choices that prioritize our well-being and the planet we call home. So, whether it's a radiant complexion, lustrous hair, or simply peace of mind, the journey toward a more natural and organic beauty regimen is a rewarding one that empowers you to look and feel your best, naturally.
