Why Making Your Own Skincare Changes Everything

January 28, 2026

Why Making Your Own Skincare Changes Everything

Why Making Your Own Skincare Changes Everything

(And Why It’s One of Brandy’s Absolute Favorite Workshops)

There’s something deeply empowering about taking your skincare into your own hands.

Not in a complicated, “you need a chemistry degree” kind of way — but in a slow, intentional, I actually know what’s going on my face kind of way. When you make your own skincare, you’re no longer guessing what’s inside a mystery bottle with a pretty label. You’re choosing every ingredient. You’re tailoring it to your skin. And you’re reconnecting with the idea that skincare can be simple, effective, and rooted in nature.

That’s exactly why Make Your Own Skincare has become one of Brandy’s absolute favorite workshops to offer.

This is the second time she’s hosting it — and not by accident. After teaching it the first time, something unexpected happened: she stopped reaching for store-bought skincare altogether. These recipes became her daily routine. Makeup remover, face wash, toner, moisturizer — all handmade, all customized, all working better than anything she had used before.

And now? She genuinely couldn’t be happier with the results.

The Philosophy Behind DIY Skincare

So much of modern skincare is built on the idea that we need more — more products, more steps, more actives, more exfoliation, more correction. But often, what our skin really wants is balance.

DIY skincare flips the script.

Instead of stripping the skin and trying to fix the damage afterward, these recipes work with your skin’s natural processes. They cleanse without over-drying, hydrate without clogging pores, and support the skin barrier rather than breaking it down.

The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is healthy, supported skin that feels good every day.

A Simple, Effective Makeup Remover That Actually Nourishes Your Skin

Let’s start where most skincare routines begin (and end their day): removing makeup.

This oil-based makeup remover is one of those “why didn’t I do this sooner?” recipes.

Why Oil Works So Well

Makeup — especially mascara, eyeliner, foundation, and sunscreen — is oil-based. And there’s a simple rule in skincare chemistry: like dissolves like. Oil breaks down oil.

Instead of scrubbing your face raw or relying on harsh surfactants, this remover gently melts makeup away while nourishing your skin at the same time.

The Star Ingredients

  • Coconut Oil
Rich in fatty acids like lauric and capric acid, coconut oil softens skin and locks in moisture while breaking down stubborn makeup. It’s especially lovely for normal to dry skin types.

  • Jojoba Oil (Optional Swap)
For acne-prone or oily skin, jojoba oil is a game changer. It isn’t technically an oil at all — it’s a liquid wax ester that closely mimics your skin’s natural sebum. This helps regulate oil production rather than overwhelm it.

  • Witch Hazel (Alcohol-Free)
Once the oil loosens makeup, witch hazel helps lift away residue. It tightens pores, reduces excess oil, and calms inflammation without drying the skin.

  • Aloe Vera Gel
Cooling, soothing, and deeply hydrating, aloe balances out the richness of the oil and the astringency of witch hazel. It leaves skin calm, refreshed, and comfortable.

Together, these ingredients create a remover that’s effective but gentle — and once you use it, it’s hard to go back to anything else.

A Foaming Face Wash That Cleans Without Stripping

One of the biggest myths in skincare is that your face needs to feel “tight” or squeaky clean to be truly clean. In reality, that tight feeling is often a sign that your natural oils have been stripped away.

This foaming face wash proves that gentle can still be effective.

Why Castile Soap Is the Perfect Base

Castile soap is made from saponified plant oils — traditionally olive oil — and contains no synthetic detergents, sulfates, parabens, or fillers. It cleans without disrupting the skin barrier and is safe for sensitive skin, babies, and fragrance-sensitive folks.

Using an unscented base allows you to fully customize the formula for your skin’s needs.

Choosing Your Skin Enhancer

This is where personalization really shines:

  • Witch Hazel for oily or acne-prone skin that needs balance and clarity

  • Aloe Vera Gel for sensitive or dry skin that craves calm and hydration

  • Jojoba Oil for skin that needs gentle moisture without heaviness

The result is a face wash that leaves skin clean, soft, and balanced — never stripped.

The Essential Oil Toner That Brings Everything Into Balance

If there’s one step people tend to skip, it’s toner. But in a routine like this, toner plays a quiet but powerful role.

This essential oil toner bridges the gap between cleansing and moisturizing, helping the skin recalibrate and prepare for hydration.

Why Witch Hazel + Vitamin E Is a Dream Team

  • Witch Hazel tones, tightens pores, reduces oil, and calms inflammation.

  • Vitamin E Oil replenishes moisture, strengthens the skin barrier, and protects against environmental stressors.

Together, they create a toner that clarifies and nourishes — something many commercial toners fail to do.

Custom Essential Oil Blends

Each blend is thoughtfully designed for different skin types:

  • Normal / Glowing Skin: Lavender, Frankincense, Geranium

  • Oily / Acne-Prone Skin: Tea Tree, Lavender, Lemongrass

  • Sensitive Skin: Chamomile, Rose, Lavender

These oils don’t just smell amazing — they actively support skin health through antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and balancing properties.

A Personalized Facial Oil That Replaced Brandy’s Moisturizer Entirely

This step is where everything clicked for Brandy.

Facial oils often get a bad reputation, especially for oily or acne-prone skin. But the right oil, used correctly, can completely transform how your skin behaves.

Why Facial Oils Work

Your skin naturally produces oil (sebum) to protect and moisturize itself. When you give it a high-quality oil that mimics this process — like jojoba — your skin often responds by producing less oil overall.

That’s why these moisturizers are so customizable.

From rosehip seed oil for mature skin to grapeseed oil for oily skin, each carrier oil is chosen for how it supports different skin types. Essential oils then enhance those benefits, offering everything from calming and hydration to toning and regeneration.

This single step replaced multiple products in Brandy’s routine — and became the moment she realized she didn’t need store-bought skincare anymore.

Why This Workshop Means So Much

This workshop isn’t just about recipes.

It’s about confidence.
It’s about understanding your skin.
It’s about slowing down and reconnecting with self-care that feels intentional and nourishing.

The first time Brandy taught this class, she hoped people would enjoy it. She didn’t expect it to completely reshape her own routine.

Now, this is the only skincare she uses daily — and the results speak for themselves. Her skin feels balanced, calm, and supported. And that’s exactly what she wants for everyone who attends.

Offering it a second time feels special — not because it’s new, but because it’s proven. Proven recipes. Proven results. Proven joy in watching people realize they can do this themselves.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by skincare, frustrated by products that overpromise, or curious about a more natural approach — this workshop is an invitation.

An invitation to learn, create, and leave feeling empowered.

And honestly? That’s why it’s one of Brandy’s favorites.
